DEADLINE EXTENDED!

Register by 30th November for
Oireachtas Essay Competition

‘Parliamentary Politics Matters’ is the theme – aiming to help young people engage with the democratic process

It wouldn’t happen in the Leaving Cert Exam Hall! But a surge in interest in the inaugural Oireachtas Essay Competition has led organisers to extend the deadline for students to register.

The Competition invites students all over the island of Ireland to submit essays in Irish or English on the theme ‘Parliamentary Politics Matters’ / ‘Tábhacht na Polaitíochta Parlaiminte’. Competition Convenor Senator Rónán Mullen says there has been a great take-up by students nationwide, including in Northern Ireland, but the organisers believe there is even more interest out there. “We are conscious that, in this first year of the Competition, some students won’t have heard of the Competition as soon as others. We have a large number of registrations already but are still getting enquiries from teachers who want to encourage their students to take part. So we have decided to extend the registration deadline for the Competition until Wednesday 30th November.”

Registered students must still submit their essays for the Competition by midday on Thursday, 8th December.

Over €4,000 worth of prizes will be awarded to the eventual winners, who will be invited along with their teachers and parents to attend an awards ceremony in Leinster House in Spring 2023.

The Competition is be run on a special website, www.oireachtasessay.ie or www.aisteanoireachtais.ie. Registering students are issued with a numerical code to ensure anonymity in the judging process.

The essays will be assessed by a team of volunteer teacher assessors and a team of Academic and Teaching professionals will determine the final destination of the prizes.

Books and stationery publisher Eason is Principal Sponsor of the Competition with educational publishing companies CJ Fallon and Folens providing associate sponsorship.
